Nat'l Assoc. for Gun Rights v. Lamont
On Hold · No Conference SetNo. 25-421
Connecticut's ban on AR-15s and other semi-automatic rifles, plus magazines over 10 rounds
What a ruling could mean
- If the Court takes it and the challengers win: Connecticut's ban on AR-15-style rifles and magazines over 10 rounds would be struck down.
- If the Court takes it and Connecticut wins: The ban stays in place.
- If the Court holds it, then sends it back: The lower court would have to reconsider Connecticut's ban in light of what the Court says in Viramontes and Grant.
Where things stand
Its companions Viramontes and Grant were granted on June 30, 2026, but NAGR v. Lamont was left pending and has not been scheduled for conference since June 29. The likely reason: unlike those two pure rifle cases, this petition also raises the magazine question, which the Court is holding in Duncan and Gator's. The 2nd Circuit upheld Connecticut's ban in August 2025.
Why it matters
The combined rifle-and-magazine question is now the subject of a direct split: the Seventh Circuit upheld Illinois's equivalent law (Barnett v. Raoul, July 9, 2026) and the Third Circuit struck down New Jersey's (July 17, 2026).
